“Tell me about something interesting you can see”

Flâneur ao Centro, commission and residency in Torres Vedras, Portugal, 2021

“Tell me about something interesting you can see” is a body of work that has been informed by stories and drawings shared with the artist by a group of children from the town of Torres Vedras, central Portugal, and the surrounding villages.

I was interested in the different perspectives that young people have of the shared experience of place, their different needs and desires, and different interests. I worked with 5 local primary schools to hear from the children. I created a workbook that asked questions like “Tell me about a piece of history from your town” or “Draw something you see when you go for a walk”, creating a trove of insights from 150 children. I then took these answers and used them as a guide to Torres Vedras, treating the children’s answers like a treasure map, an adventure to find and discover the places and stories herself. Gathering and photographing the things and places mentioned by the children, creating a scrapbook or logbook of days exploring through the eyes of the child.

The work was exhibited in 4 outdoor installations in Central Portugal between April and November 2022, the works being presented on 1mx1mx1m lightbox cubes for the community and local children to explore and see the results. This work was commissioned by Procurarte.
